Who is Fontana? Lavinia Fontana was born in Bologna in 1552 and died in 1614 aged 62. She was the daughter of Prospero Fontana, a well-known artist and teacher. Lavinia may from been drawing and painting early in her life but evidence suggests that her father did not begin training her until she was in her teens. He lost one of his wealthy patrons and saw his income declining. Lavinia showed great promise and Prospero educated her with the hopes that she would take over his studio.
